COVID-19 RELATED NEWS AND UPDATES

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 is mostly spread by respiratory droplets released when people talk, cough, or sneeze. It is thought that the virus may spread to hands from a contaminated surface and then to the nose or mouth, causing infection. The more people (i.e. students and employees) interact with a symptomatic person, and the longer the interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread. Therefore, personal prevention practices, such as handwashing, staying home when sick, and environmental cleaning and disinfecting are important principles to consider. (CDC, 2020)

During this unprecedented national health emergency, the Iroquois School District is proactively monitoring COVID-19 to reduce community spread. Our schools will adhere to established COVID-19 school health procedures. If a student presents with the combination of the following, she/he will be sent home along with a copy of the Health Room Symptom Referral Form completed by the nurses. It is recommended the parent consult with a healthcare provider prior to the child returning to school.

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Fever of 100.4 or higher
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose/congestion
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain, fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea

If your child displays either of these scenarios, the following Health Room Symptom Referral Form will be completed by our staff and accompany your child when s/he is sent home.


Iroquois Cyber Learners Meals

The Iroquois School District is happy to report that the State has approved the distribution of meals for students enrolled in the District and receiving education via one of the District’s Cyber Learning programs. The meals will be distributed at your child’s school via curbside pickup on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00–10:30 a.m. (For the first week of school, pick up days will be Tuesday and Wednesday.) If you have children attending multiple schools, you will be assigned one school to pick up all meals. 

Iroquois School District is a CEP district, which means all students are entitled to one free breakfast and lunch per school day. Monday’s meals will include two breakfasts and two lunches and Wednesday’s meals will include three breakfasts and three lunches. Please note, the meals will be provided only for instructional days on the Iroquois School District Academic Calendar. If school is not in session on a Monday or Wednesday, the distribution will occur on the next day that school is open. Please see the district website for updates as necessary.

To ensure the integrity of our program and in accordance with the USDA Guidelines, Iroquois School District has implemented the following procedures:

  1. The Parent or Legal Guardian must fill out the enclosed application. The application is also available online at the Iroquois School District website, under Food Service.
  2. If the child(ren) are not present, only the Parent or Legal Guardian will be allowed to pick up and sign for their child(ren)’s meals. Proof of identification will be required at the time of pick up.

Iroquois Elementary School Reopening Update for Parents

July 27, 2020

Hello families!

Both the district and building administration realize that this a difficult time for families and have been diligently working to put together a reopening plan that takes into account the health and safety of staff and students. We know this can be a difficult time for parents and families to determine what route to take when considering sending children to school in the fall . That being said, I wanted to share more detailed information about our reopening plan.

At this time, if the county is operating in the green phase, all students will return to the building. Students will be spread out in classrooms as much as is feasibly possible to conduct instruction. Students in 5th and 6th grade will utilize the cafeteria for lunch, while students in Pre-K through 4th grade will eat lunch in their classrooms. Students will be offered specials on a 5-day rotation and take part in daily recess activities as directed by the specials teachers. Due to the mask mandate issued by the governor on July 1st, all students will be required to wear a mask during the school day. We are working diligently to determine the best way to build in outdoor mask breaks for students during the school day. Modified arrival and dismissal procedures will be used to ensure that student safety is considered throughout the school day. If you plan to utilize school district transportation, the district is moving to a model where each family will be given one pick-up location in the morning and one drop-off location in the afternoon. In the yellow phase, class numbers in Pre-K through 4th grade will be reduced and students in 5th and 6th grade will follow a modified hybrid schedule to allow for increased social distancing. In this phase all students will eat lunch and classrooms and the specials schedule may be modified to accommodate health and safety requirements. If we are required to move to the red phase, all learning will be remote and delivered by the grade level teachers to whom your child is assigned. The district will utilize one unified platform for delivery of remote learning.

Iroquois Jr./Sr. High School Reopening Update for Parents

Iroquois Jr./Sr. High School Parents/Guardians:

The administration realizes what a trying time this is for all of our families within the district. We have been working hard this summer preparing for all of the different contingencies caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This is obviously made more difficult by the federal and state mandates that change on a daily basis. The purpose of this letter is to help clarify the current plan for the start of the 2020-21 school year. It is our sincerest hope that this will help you decide the best course of action for your student’s return.

At the time of this letter, the Iroquois School District is planning to receive students on August 25, 2020 for their first day of classes. Our current plan is to bring the students back for a traditional schedule of seven periods and a tutorial. Classes will be conducted every day, Monday through Friday. Under this plan, we are requiring students to wear masks and we have reduced most class sizes to allow for as much social distancing as feasible. In this “green phase”, students will also be eating lunch in the cafeteria with the social distancing procedures as much as feasible.

If the numbers of COVID cases rise in Pennsylvania, we have a number of contingencies for our schedule. It is possible that we would continue with school using an A/B (every other day) set up. This is likely to occur if the state would move into a “yellow phase”. If we do go to an A/B schedule the class sizes would be reduced by half. Students would also be required to eat lunch in their fifth period classroom.

As you are aware, we are keeping the health and safety of our students at the forefront of every decision that we make. Student schedules will be made available through Infinite Campus on August 10, 2020 with a finalized version being mailed home after that time. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented athletics across the world with a myriad of challenges. The COVID-19 virus is a highly contagious illness that primarily attacks the upper respiratory system. The virus that causes COVID-19 can infect people of all ages. Research from the Centers for Disease Control, among others, has found that while children do get infected by COVID-19, relatively few children with COVID-19 are hospitalized. However, some severe outcomes have been reported in children, and a child with a mild or even asymptomatic case of COVID-19 can spread the infection to others who may be far more vulnerable. While it is not possible to eliminate all risk of furthering the spread of COVID-19, the current science suggests there are many steps schools can take to reduce the risks to students, coaches, and their families.

The Iroquois SD will take the necessary precautions and recommendations from the federal, state, and local governments, CDC, and PA DOH, as well as the NFHS and PIAA. The Iroquois SD realizes the knowledge regarding COVID-19 is constantly changing as new information and treatments become available. These recommendations will be adjusted as needed as new information becomes available in order to decrease the risk of exposure for our staff, students, and spectators.

Meal Distribution Updates

June 25, 2020 Update:

Meal Distribution Will Continue Through July and August
Meal distribution the week of the Fourth of July holiday will take place on Tuesday, June 30th  from 9 am – 11 am and Thursday, July 2nd from 11 am – 1 pm to allow staff time to pack meals. Meal distribution the next week will resume with the Tuesday and Friday schedule at the normal time, from 9 am – 11 am at both locations. Tuesday distribution will include breakfast and lunch for 3 days – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Friday distribution will include breakfast and lunch for 4 days – Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Meal distribution will continue through the summer until school opens in August.


May 20, 2020 Update:

Meal distribution following the Memorial Day holiday will take place on Tuesday, May 26th from 11 am - 1 pm to allow staff time to prepare meals. Distribution on Friday, May 29th will resume a the normal time, from 9 am - 11 am at both locations. Tuesday distribution will include breakfast and lunch for 3 days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). Friday distribution will include breakfast and lunch for 4 days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday).

April 23, 2020 Update:

Meal distribution will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays each week from 9 am – 11 am at both locations. Tuesday distribution will include breakfast and lunch for 3 days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). Friday distribution will include breakfast and lunch for 4 days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday).

Goal of Plan
The objective of this plan is to provide quality educational services to our students during the COVID-19 mandatory school closure, which was implemented by Governor Wolf on March 13, 2020. We are committed to providing the best possible educational program that can be delivered during this stressful and difficult time. Our goal is to enable all students to have access to both review and enrichment activities, and build to a point where we can proceed with planned instruction. We want to provide learning opportunities for our students without creating undo stress on them and their families.
Overview of Plan
The District will engage in Review and Enrichment activities from March 30 until April 24, 2020. During this time, our teachers will experiment with various online learning tools and transition to developing unique online lessons with packets being produced for the students who do not have access to a working WIFI, a computer device or both. With the anticipated support of the state through the Continuity of Education Equity Grant, we hope to be able to provide all of our students with access to a stable WIFI connection sometime during the week of April 20th. We will then hand out student devices and move toward planned instruction. We will spend the first 5 days of planned instruction on ending Term 3, and then we will proceed to a shortened Term 4 grading period. This plan is dependent upon receiving funding from the Education Equity Grant and the availability of the necessary equipment.

To create meaningful and engaging lessons that provide all students with the opportunity to learn. To create an environment of support and compassion during this difficult situation facing our country.

Student attendance will be monitored by the completion of assignments. Records will be kept by individual teachers and forwarded to their School Offices.
Good Faith Efforts for Access and Equity for All Students
Families were surveyed to determine who needed Internet access along with a device to connect to the Internet. Those who indicated they were in need received either an Internet hotspot, a device, or both.
Special Education Supports
We are committed to providing each student receiving special education services the Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) included in their IEPs to the maximum extent possible. We will provide support through email, phone calls, or video calls. Activities and assignments, curriculum, and/or expectations will be adapted and/or modified in accordance with SDI, as outlined in student plans. Related service personnel will be available to provide support and consultation through email, phone calls, or video calls. Teachers are also available to answer questions and provide live support as students work through lessons/activities/assignments. We also encourage our students and families to reach out to our staff.
EL Supports
EL teachers will reach out to their caseloads to provide support, where needed. They will also collaborate with the classroom teachers to provide strategies/suggestions for their enrichment/review materials. We also encourage our students and families to reach out to our staff.
Gifted Education
We are committed to providing each student receiving gifted education services the Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) included in their GIEPs to the maximum extent possible.
